The January 2020 Issue of The Maine Sportsman

December 27, 2019 | Newsletter

Snow and Ice mean Sledding and Fishing are Nice!

– – –
Now that the gifts are all open and the in-laws have headed home, it’s time to get outside and fire up the snowmobile and the power auger.
Eric Ready of Brunswick sent us a frame shot from a video filmed by him and a friend as they ice-fished on Echo Lake in Fayette last winter. “This impressive bird is an immature eagle. It kept pestering my friend, trying to get his catch, flying from tree to tree and keeping an eye on us. We decided to give the eagle this nice trout as a peace offering in the hopes it would keep the big bird busy while we continued fishing.” Setting up a trail cam, they achieved this impressive image of the eagle swooping in. January 1 marks the beginning of ice fishing in the northern half of the state — at least for those who’ve purchased their 2020 fishing licenses!

To celebrate the New Year of angling and trail riding, the January issue of The Maine Sportsman provides a wealth of information, instruction and entertainment, including:
     — Fishing for giant cusk through the ice, with Luke Giampetruzzi
     — Maine’s splake lakes, by Steve Carpenteri, and

     — Three great snowmobile trips, by Matt Weber (Maine beer brewer, and author of the new book, “Making Tracks”).

     Want more? We’ve got it!
— Maine’s new crossbow law
— Beef jerky championship of the world, and

— Sea ducks, rabbits (and savory rabbit stew!), striped bass, raccoons, night hunters, turkeys, a hungry eagle, Hal Blood and big, big deer.

So look for us on the newsstand. Order a subscription online (www.MaineSportsman.com) or give us a call at (207) 622-4242.  Did you forget to give your daughter’s boyfriend (or your son’s girlfriend) a holiday present? Give us a call for a gift subscription — we’ll drop the new issue right in the mail, and you can blame us for being a few days late!

So Happy New Year to all outdoorspeople — those in Maine and northern New England, and those who want to be!
