The Maine Sportsman’s June 2021 Issue

June 4, 2021 | Newsletter

Eastern Brook Trout – Nature’s Work of Art!

What is it about the Eastern Brook Trout that excites the early-summer Maine angler? The marbled vermiculation pattern along the back? The red spots haloed in blue, and the white-rimmed fins? The knowledge that the belly will become fiery orange-red during the fall spawn?

Youth Writing Contest Winner, Carly Turgeon, is hoping to master the 360-degree spin on her wakesurfer this summer.

Or is it that fly fishermen have to go to the most beautiful, remote ponds in our state, or the smallest spring fed brooks, to find these fish? Well, regardless, brookies are a focus of attention in the June, 2021 issue of The Maine Sportsman, receiving coverage by King Montgomery (“Sportsman’s Journal,” page 11), Tom Seymour (“Trout Fishing,” page 44), and Lou Zambello (nymphing techniques, in “Fresh Water Fly Fishing,” page 46).

And what else is in store for readers this month? How about the first installment of Youth Writing Contest winners? Carly Turgeon focuses on wake surfing (page 36) while Michael Maines tells of a frozen adventure in deep snow with his shed-hunting beagle, Judy. See the list of all 21 skilled youth writers by clicking here, including links to their winning entries.

The issue offers numerous Special Sections, including “Top 10 saltwater lures (page 20), “Camping by ATV (page 27), and an important update on new rules (and more permits) for Maine’s moose lottery (page 29).

All this, plus kayaking, snakes, moose-and-bear meatloaf, largemouth bass, the Thompson/Center Contender; and the best humor and cartoons east of West Brownfield?
