What time of year is it? That’s right – it’s BIGGEST BUCKS time!
February is the month each year The Maine Sportsman magazine honors those whitetail hunters skilled or fortunate enough to become members of the Biggest Bucks in Maine Club, by tagging a deer weighing 200 pounds or more. And it takes five full pages of the issue to list the 525 successful hunters from last fall’s season. Look at the list carefully, to see who got what size deer, where and when. And the biggest of them all, the “Top 10,” from 248 pounds up to a monstrous 274 pounds, are photographed with the proud hunters.
And that’s not all! Here are a few of the issue’s highlights:
- Maine snowmobile race listings
- Warden Tibbetts tackles a night hunter
- Outfitting yourself with hunting gear on a budget, and
- Lightweight, pop-up ice fishing shelters
Want more snowmobile material? How about “Midnight Rider,” covering nighttime trail riding, and “Snowmobiling in Comfort and Style,” by newcomer Samuel Wheeler, describing technological advances in the newest models.
And boat shows are right around the corner, so to get us thinking about warmer weather and fast, powerful boats, veteran journalist Bob Humphrey offers “What’s New in Outboard Control,” detailing the modern steering and navigational systems that keep our hulls moving in a straight line with joy sticks and control consoles.
All this, plus quotes, cartoons, Lefty Kreh, tasty recipes, jokes, rabbits, Baxter State Park, rifles, trophy photos, fly-tying, togue, northern pike, and even a guest “Saltwater” column by Barry Gibson’s son, Mike.
And it’s a big issue – 88 pages! Stack that up to the competition!

Good luck to hunters during bobcat, rabbit and coyote seasons; be safe in the woods; and continue to use extreme caution on the ice this month.
