The October 2022 Issue of The Maine Sportsman

September 22, 2022 | Newsletter

A Good Dog is a Hunter’s Best Friend

Hunting is an activity in which you can engage while surrounded by your best friends – pointers, setters, retrievers and hounds. And in honor of those many friendships, The Maine Sportsman presents its October, 2022 issue, featuring dogs, dogs and more dogs.

Dogs quickly become part of the family. Here, the author and his wife, Denise, and loyal Brittany Spaniel “BD” (short for “bird dog”) enjoy an afternoon pheasant hunt. Without BD’s nose, the couple would have walked right by that big ole pheasant. Bill Sheldon photo

On the cover, a photo of the trustworthy and family-friendly German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP). On the inside pages, Steve Carpenteri helps de-mystify the intriguing (and sometimes misunderstood) sport of hound hunting for Maine’s black bear. William Clunie (“Rangeley Region”), Michael Browning (Special feature: “Bells, Beepers and GPS”) and Bill Sheldon (“Katahdin Country”) describe the appropriate use of electronic collars (e-collars). Those same writers also discuss how to safely drive the back roads with your bird dog inside the truck (in “Off-Road Traveler”) and the pain of losing a faithful canine hunting companion after 15 years (see “Someone’s Missing,” Jackman Region).

So what else is going on this month? Moose, of course! Our writers are up to the task, with “Maine Sportswoman” Christi Holmes getting it done with “The Blueberry Barren Bull,” while Staci Warren sets forth her “Moose Hunt Preparation Checklist,” Jim Andrews (“Self-Propelled Sportsman”) learns that the same moose that frequent the campsite during pre-season scouting, somehow disappear on Opening Day, and New Hampshire columnist Ethan Emerson teaches the value of not giving up early, in his moose-hunting contribution, “Last Hour, Last Day.”

All that and more, including:

  • Hunting whitetail deer, both with a rifle and a bow
  • A preview of new snowmobile models and features
  • Backwoods law, from our retired Warden Lt. Doug Tibbetts (“How Shall Ye Plea?”)
  • Uncomplicated fishing gear (“Jon’s Jottings”) and
  • Memories of multiple mammoth striped bass (“Salt Water Fishing,” with Barry Gibson).

All this, plus world-class cartoons, and the best jokes south of East Machias and north of West Minot.

So take part in October’s many outdoor pursuits, and whenever you can take a break, enjoy this issue of The Sportsman, cover to cover.
