Get Out There and Fish
The Norwegian expression “Den beste tiden å fiske er når du kan” translates to “The best time to go fishing is whenever you can.” The Scandinavians have got that right, and it’s a sentiment we fully pursue in the June 2024 issue of The Maine Sportsman magazine.
It starts with our outstanding cover photo of Maine Guide and Minot resident Anthony Jolicoeur, shown in the process of releasing a handsome landlocked salmon he caught while fishing the dam pool along Grand Lake Stream.
Throughout the issue, variety is the only constant, as our expert contributors pursue striped bass (John LaMarca in his “Guide Talk,” and Bob Humphrey in “Saltwater Fishing”); brook trout (Lindsey Rustad, page 14, and Bill Graves, page 32); largemouth bass (see Harvey Wheeler’s 7.8-lb. trophy photo, page 46, and Staci Warren’s baitcasting column, page 56); and togue, salmon and even cusk (read Tom Seymour’s “Moosehead” column, page 50).
Moose are in the news in June, since Fort Kent, way up north in the “crown” of Maine, is hosting the moose lottery drawing and festival on Saturday, June 15. Read the latest in Bill Graves’ piece titled “Details Coming Together for the Moose Lottery,” page 30.
All this, and much more awaits you in the June issue, including William Clunie’s ode to lever action rifles (p. 71), Staci Warren’s “Best Bear Cartridges” (p. 22), and Joe Saltalamachia’s contemplative piece on Sunday hunting (p. 38).
For touches of true humor, take a look at retired Lieutenant Doug Tibbetts’ “Tales from the Warden Service” (“Time to Vacate This Place,” page 63) and Randy Randall’s monthly contribution, “How to Sink an Outboard Motor” (page 61).
All this, plus provocative letters to the editor, “Quotable Sportsman” phraseology, and the best cartoons available anywhere.
